Hello Yakkers,
It was a glorious morning when Steve, Mal and I set off for Jew Shoal. It was a very easy launch and paddle out, arriving at approx 6.45am. On the way out Mal caught a biggie and almost got it to the kayak before it got off. From what he saw of it he feels quite sure it was a blue fin tuna. As we were fishing we were contacted by Kevin who was doing a morning walk at the national park, most envious he wasn't with us on such a glorious morning and even more so when I caught a very nice sized sweetlip. He told us he had to take Nick and Lee to the airport, that being the reason he wasn't with us.
The fish were scarce and by 12 noon I had caught a keeper snapper and another undersize snapper whereas Steve had caught nothing of note (it happens to all of us Steve). Steve and I called it a day just after 12.00 noon and headed for shore with a lovely tail breeze assisting us.
Shortly before the nets I had a strike and had a good fight on my hands, eventually landing what I have been told is a tailor. It certainly put up an incredible fight for its size. We both landed uneventfully. So the tally was 1 sweetlip, 1 snapper and 1 tailor. See attached photo.
Mal had left us much earlier and had tried fishing close into shore near the national park. He found things so peaceful and after a heavy night out he promptly fell asleep and fell out of his kayak... much to his surprise. Naturally he woke up rather quickly and had to clamber back onto his kayak. On the way into shore he had another good strike and he tells me that it was a bigger fish than the first one and it too got away, not long after it had struck. He made it back to shore without any more dramas at 11.30am.
At this stage Thursday is looking good and maybe Friday. We will see what happens with the forecast over the next few days.
